Manufacturing in China is expanding / July 29, 2022

A Reuter’s poll shows that China's factory activity has expanded at the fastest pace in a year. Production in COVID-hit manufacturing hubs has resumed now that lockdowns are lifted. The official manufacturing Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) is expected to have risen to 50.4 in July - the highest in 12 months - compared with 50.2 in the previous month.

Two surveys find Chinese manufacturing’s recovery from anti-virus shutdowns faltered in July. The China Federation of Logistics & Purchasing reports factory activity was depressed by weak global demand and anti-virus controls that are weighing on domestic consumer spending. The Federation and the National Bureau of Statistics issues a monthly purchasing managers’ index. That index retreated to 49 from June’s 50.2 on a 100-point scale. On that scale numbers below 50 indicate activity declining.

Pelosi visit to Taiwan - China announces military exercise opposite Taiwan / July 30 2022

China said it was conducting military exercises off its coast opposite Taiwan. The military exercises come after China warned U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to scrap possible plans to visit the island democracy. Pelosi has yet to confirm whether or not she will go.

Preparing for war post draws wide support / July 29, 2022

"Preparing for war!" This short social media post by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) 80th Group Army generated over 300,000 thumbs-ups in 12 hours on July 29. The post on Sina Weibo received more than 19,000 comments. Some veterans said that they are always prepared to return to the PLA whenever the country needs them. Some netizens expressed their wish for reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Straits soon. The 95th anniversary of the founding of the PLA occurs on August 1.

China unveils an aircraft-killer missile / July 31, 2022

Leading up to the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), China published a video that features the launch of what resembles a DF-17 missile. This missile displays the flexibility of the "aircraft carrier killer" hypersonic weapon that is almost impossible to intercept. The video was published ahead of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's possible visit to Taiwan.

Calls for more attention to violence against women / July 22, 2022

Last month a gang of men brutally attacked several women in Tangshan. In response, Chinese authorities have focused on organized crime instead of violence against women. While there have been some small steps in the right direction, the state still refuses to treat gendered violence as a systemic problem.

Biden and Xi talk for over two hours / July 28, 2022

President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone for 2 hours and 17 minutes on July 28, their first conversation in roughly four months. The call was part of the administration's efforts "to maintain and deepen lines of communication" between the U.S. and the People's Republic of China (PRC) and to "responsibly manage our differences and work together where our interests align," according to a White House statement.

Japan’s defense document points to Chinese threat / July 22, 2022

Japan’s Defense Minister warned on July 22 in a white paper titled, The Defense of Japan 2022, that China poses a growing military threat to Japan. He states, “China continues to unilaterally change or attempt to change the status quo by coercion in the East China Sea and South China Sea … [and] has made clear that it would not hesitate to unify Taiwan by force.”

US Navy secretary warns Asian aggressors will face Western might / July 27, 2022

Any Asian aggressor who violates the sovereignty of other countries in the region risks punitive counteractions, similar to what Russia is confronting for its invasion of Ukraine. That was the warning from the U.S. secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, in a veiled threat to China's increasingly assertive behavior in the disputed South China Sea.

China Targeted Fed to Build Informant Network and Access Data / July 26, 2022

China tried to build a network of informants inside the US Federal Reserve system. The investigation by Republican staff members of the Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs found that over a decade Fed employees were offered contracts with Chinese talent recruitment programs. Inducements often included cash payments. Employees were asked to provide information on the U.S. economy, interest rate changes, and policies

China's population to see negative growth by 2025 / July 25, 2022

China’s dwindling population will touch negative growth by 2025 and may continue to shrink for more than a century, according to China’s National Health Commission. Chinese demographers predicted that negative population growth will be the dominant trend in the coming years for a long time and improving the overall quality of the population and changing economic development plans are vital to address the problem.

A huge Chinese rocket booster is about to fall to Earth / July 25, 2022

The Chinese rocket booster that launched another section of China's space station into orbit will fall back to Earth on its own. Similar uncontrolled falls occurred in 2020 and 2021. Jonathan McDowell, an experienced tracker of these events at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said, "The inert ... core stage remains in orbit and was not actively deorbited. [Americans] do a rather better job of upper stage disposal, and China on average a worse one."

A Chinese banking official is under investigation in $6 billion scandal / July 24, 2022

An official once responsible for overseeing the banks at the center of one of China’s biggest financial scandals has been placed under investigation two weeks after rare protests broke out in the central province of Henan. Li Huanting, a senior inspector at its Henan branch, was responsible for supervising the market access of village and other small and medium rural banks in Henan between 2012 and 2014. He was later promoted to become deputy head of the watchdog’s Henan office.

Biden considers lifting some tariffs on Chinese goods / July 24, 2022

As President Biden considers whether to lift tariffs on some Chinese goods, he is listening to two opposing voices. On one side, an analysis by the Peterson Institute for International Economics claims that lifting tariffs on some Chinese-made products would save households hundreds of dollars. On the other side is the potential for losing the support of unions.

Gen. Milley says China dangerous to US / July 24, 2022

The Chinese military has become significantly more aggressive and dangerous over the past five years. That is the assessment of U.S. Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “The message is the Chinese military, in the air and at sea, have become significantly more and noticeably more aggressive in this particular region.”

Chinese observers believe that the Biden administration has clearly received China's message about a possible diplomatic and military response should Pelosi visit Taiwan. “[This] could be something the US is not able to afford.”

Arms race: US successfully tests a hypersonic weapon / July 18, 2022

The United States has successfully tested a Raytheon Technologies Corp air-breathing hypersonic weapon capable of speeds faster than five times the speed of sound. "Advancing our nation's hypersonic capabilities is a critical national imperative," Wes Kremer, president of Raytheon's Missiles & Defense business unit, said. The weapon will spur Russia and China toward more fully developing their own hypersonic weapons.

According to Henry Kissinger, President Joe Biden should be wary of letting domestic politics interfere with “the importance of understanding the permanence of China.” “Biden and previous administrations have been too much influenced by the domestic aspects of the view of China,” Kissinger, 99, said. “It is, of course, important to prevent Chinese or any other country’s hegemony…. [But] that is not something that can be achieved by endless confrontations.”

GDP growth slowed to 0.4 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2022, from 4.8 percent year-on-year in the first quarter. Nonetheless, China predicts its GDP will grow to 5.3% year-on-year in the third quarter and 5.9% year-on-year in the fourth quarter.

China is relocating residents from the Tibet Autonomous Region. China claims its to provide them with a better life and to protect the fragile local ecosystem. Others claim it is to exert more governmental control over the area.

The story behind the Henan bank protest / July 15, 2022

Four small banks in Henan, China promised customers higher interest rates (1-1.5% higher) than bigger banks. Investments in these banks were advertised as “bank deposits.” Bank deposits would be protected from loss. But the banks did not treat their customers’ money as bank deposits. A significant portion of the 40 billion yuan (about $6 billion) involved in this case is gone.

After 11 consecutive years of being profitable, Chinese airlines are losing billions of dollars. In 2019, the airlines showed profits of $8.19 billion. Since then, the industry has suffered cumulative losses of nearly 300 billion yuan ($44.80 billion).

President Xi visits Xinjiang for the first time in 8 years / July 15, 2022

Chinese leader Xi Jinping visited Xinjiang in the country’s northwest this week amid concerns over China’s detention of a million or more members of primarily Muslim ethnic minorities in the remote border region. Xi stressed the full and faithful implementation of his ruling Communist Party’s policies in the region and highlighted social stability and lasting security as the overarching goals.

China to US: Stay out of South China Sea / July 14, 2022

China begins construction on world's most far-reaching radar system / July 11, 2022

China has begun constructing a new high-definition deep-space active observation facility in the country's Southwest Chongqing municipality. Its goal is to boost its defense capability against near-earth asteroids and its sensing capability for the Earth-Moon system. The facility will provide high-definition observation of asteroids within 93 million miles of earth.

China’s charging stations for electric vehicles increases 101.2% / July 11, 2022

In the first half of 2022, China is rapidly building out its charging stations for electric vehicles. Public charging stations (piles) increased by 228.4% year-on-year. Private charging piles increased 511.3% year-on-year. As of June 2022, the cumulative number of charging infrastructure nationwide was 3.918 million units, a year-on-year increase of 101.2%.

China’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine is complicating U.S.-Chinese relations at a time when they are already beset by rifts and enmity over numerous other issues, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told his Chinese counterpart on Saturday. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi blamed the U.S. for the downturn in relations and said that American policy has been derailed by what he called a misperception of China as a threat. “Many people believe that the United States is suffering from a China-phobia,” he said, according to a Chinese statement. “If such threat-expansion is allowed to grow, U.S. policy toward China will be a dead end with no way out.”

China's Xi offers condolences to Japan PM Kishida over Abe's death / July 9, 2022

Chinese President Xi Jinping has offered condolences to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the death of former Japanese political leader Shinzo Abe. Xi was quoted by the official Xinhua News Agency as telling Kishida, "I have reached important consensus" with Abe to build China-Japan ties that "meet the requirements of the new era."

US officials arrested for harassing ex-pat Chinese / July 7, 2022

US prosecutors announced charges on July 7 against a government agent and private investigator in a widening probe of an alleged scheme to stalk and harass Chinese dissidents in the United States. Craig Miller, a 15-year employee of the Department of Homeland Security, and Derrick Taylor, a former DHS worker, were named in an indictment filed in federal court in Brooklyn. Prosecutors allege the pair obstructed justice by plotting to obtain information from a restricted federal law enforcement database.

China intercepts a Russian ship in waters claimed by China and Japan / July 5, 2022

A Russian ship sailed close to an island claimed by both China and Japan. China says it sent a frigate to intercept the Russian vessel and warn it of straying into its waters. Japan officially complained to China that the Russian and Chinese ships had illegally entered its territorial waters. A Chinese spokesman said the two country’s ships “had nothing to do” with China-Russia cooperation. “The People’s Liberation Army didn’t send any warships to form a joint flotilla with any Russian warships this time…. The Russian warship was a foreign vessel intruding into Diaoyu waters, so the Chinese frigate needed to intercept it and keep watch. The PLA Navy takes the same approach in dealing with all foreign vessels.”

Comments on Chinese websites severely restricted by new rules / July 7, 2022

In 2017, a provision called “Provisions on the Management of Internet Post Comments Services” required that those who managed Chinese news sites where comments could be posted had to know the real identity of users who comment on posts. It also required they review the content, eliminate “unlawful” comments, and report those who had posted them. This year those provisions have been amended. The main change is that the rules regulating comments about news are now extended to all subjects. All posts must be reviewed before publishing.

China for sending fighters jets across Taiwan Strait / July 8, 2022

Chinese fighter jets crossed the median line of the sensitive Taiwan Strait on July 8 in what the island's government slammed as a provocation. The intrusion pairs with a senior US senator visiting Taipei for a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen. China claims democratically-ruled Taiwan as its own territory. China has ramped up military and political pressure to try and force the island to accept Chinese rule.

China probes 1990s case of a baby taken from parents / July 5, 2022

China has suspended two health officials in the southern region of Guangxi as authorities investigate the case of a baby boy taken from his parents by local government officials in the 1990s. The boy's parents filed a petition for police to investigate their son's whereabouts after he was taken more than 22 years ago, under a one-child policy prevailing at the time. During that period, authorities routinely enforced family planning measures, including fines, to punish illegal births.

Chinese news media report that Phinij Jarusombat, former Thai deputy prime minister, has described Chinese President Xi Jinping is a broad-minded leader with poise, unswerving determination, and creativity. Western envoys in China criticized Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, with the U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Burns saying China should not spread Russian "propaganda." This took place during an unusual public forum in a country that has declined to condemn Moscow's attack. Burns was flanked by the British and French ambassadors to his left and a Chinese government adviser and the Russian ambassador to his right.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping on July 1 claimed "true democracy" began in Hong Kong 25 years ago when China assumed control from Britain. "After its return to the motherland, Hong Kong compatriots became masters of their own affairs, Hong Kong people administered Hong Kong with a high degree of autonomy, and that was the beginning of true democracy in Hong Kong," Xi said in a keynote address to Hong Kong officials to mark the 25th anniversary of the handover.

Personal information relating to roughly one billion Chinese citizens has reportedly been stolen in what could be one of the largest cyber heists in history. The data is said to contain people’s names, addresses, birthplaces, national ID numbers, phone numbers, and information on any criminal cases the individuals be involved in.

China has no plans to colonize the moon, but the US does / July 3, 2022

China’s Global Times says NASA administrator Bill Nelson erred when he warned, "We should be very concerned that China will land on the moon and say: 'This is ours now and you are going to stay out.'" The Global Times references Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert and TV commentator, who says the US is viewing the moon with a colonial mentality. Song maintains that China has always made efforts to build a community with a shared future for humankind. The country always believes that the moon does not belong to any country alone, but to all humanity.

HK man convicted in Hong Kong unrest given 43-month sentence / July 1, 2022

A 33-year-old chef was sentenced to a prison term of three years and seven months at the district court yesterday for rioting and violating the mask ban during a 2019 protest. In her judgment, Judge Lily Wong Sze-lai said Derek Chan Chun-ling not only remained at the scene after seeing the situation escalate but joined in by picking up bricks and standing on the front lines.

Outrage for supporting the overturning of Roe v. Wade / July 1, 2022

In a rare instance of a public figure facing backlash on the Chinese internet over views on abortion, Tracey Chang Xinyue, a Beijing-born, London-based influencer/ entrepreneur who has more than 3 million followers across major social media sites in China, has set off a firestorm of criticism online after expressing her praise for the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Chen Xu, head of the Chinese Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, told the 50th session of the UN Human Rights Council that there is a clear human rights imperative for the UN human rights machinery to act and play its role in facilitating a sustainable, equitable and resilient recovery from the pandemic. "We emphasize that the COVID-19 pandemic can be countered effectively only through international cooperation, unity, solidarity, and collective action, based on a multilateral approach, and strong international institutions."

Global Times: US can’t compete with China’s Belt and Road program / June 27, 2022

During the G7 summit on Sunday, US President Joe Biden said: "Collectively, we aim to mobilize nearly $600 billion from the G7 by 2027." He did not name China but US and Western media made no attempt to disguise that it is to "confront" or "compete" with China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

US makes it harder for China’s illegal fishing industry / June 27, 2022

The Biden administration is stepping up efforts to combat illegal fishing by China, ordering federal agencies to better coordinate among themselves as well as with foreign partners in a bid to promote sustainable exploitation of the world's oceans. Nearly 11% of total U.S. seafood imports in 2019 worth $2.4 billion came from illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, according to the U.S. International Trade Commission, a federal agency.

US Navy intrusion in South China Sea / June 26, 2022

China’s Global Times reports that the US Navy sent a warship to the South China Sea on Saturday (June 25). The day before a US spy plane provocatively flew over the Taiwan Straits. Chinese experts said on Sunday that the US vessel might also stir up troubles in the South China Sea or the Taiwan Straits.
