We American’s celebrate our independence on July 4 with a national holiday, fireworks, and other festivities. But not a week off from work, unless we take vacation days.

China’s National Day

But in China, the commemorate of the founding of People’s Republic of China in 1949 is marked by a seven day holiday.

October 1 is National Day, the day the Central People's Government was formed. October 2nd the new government passed the Resolution on the National Day of the People's Republic of China. It declared October 1 to be the Chinese National Day.

Golden Week

Associated with National Day is Golden Week. It is golden because of the time off from work, because of the golden fall weather, and because of the golden time for travel. Only the Chinese new year provides a longer holiday season (15 days).
