NEWS//Chinese new year 2020

At 12:00 am on January 25, China celebrates its cultural new year. (Midnight in China is 10:00 am CST on January 24 in the U.S.). Following the new year celebration is the Spring Festival. Both holidays provide China with up to 15 days of celebration.

Hundreds of millions travel during the holidays. Most Chinese return home to visit with family. Many use the holiday to enjoy vacation spots in China and beyond.

House cleaning prepares homes for the new year. Gifts are given, especially to children. Family gatherings may extend over several days. The abundance of food served at meals frequently resembles the meals Americans eat at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Each year in China is said to have the characteristics of one of the animals in the Chinese zodiac. 2020 is the year of the rat. Rats are a sign of wealth and surplus. Because of their reproduction rate, married couples find hope for the birth of a child during this year.
