NEWS//Chinese teachers monitored closely
According to an article in Bitter Winter, China is enforcing strict measures to ensure that teachers in China’s schools and universities are absolutely loyal to the government.
Those measures include:
Restricting teachers' ability to travel. Teachers must relinquish their passports after each trip abroad. They are not able to leave China without permission, even to take a vacation in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
Conducting school assessments, teacher interviews, and classroom visits to determine if teachers’ ideology aligns with Chinese policy. Teachers who are found wanting can be punished or fired.
Planting student informants in classes to help ensure that teachers live up to Chinese expectations.
Establishing “ideological control teams” in schools. These teams stop teachers from criticizing the government or its socialist system. These teams also scrutinize teachers’ religious beliefs. "A simple remark about religion in class may land teachers in trouble."
Requiring teachers to pledge their allegiance to the Communist Party.
