MINISTRY//Quarantined

Across China, people are quarantined in a national attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19. They are only allowed to leave their apartments for short periods of time. Most can only go out once a week; then only to purchase food and other necessities. Many dress in layers of clothing they hope will protect them from the virus. Everyone on the street is required to have a permission card. In at least one city, drones are used to monitor (and correct) the movements of people on the street.

Many Chinese have not been able to earn a living during the quarantine, because they can’t leave for work, because they refuse to go to work, and because their employees have not restarted operations.

One friend of 316NOW describes how being restricted to their apartments affects families. “People are going stir crazy,” she said. But she added, “Families are forced to spend time with each other. For a number of families, the good news is, that is building relationships.”

Schools are struggling to offer instruction. Teachers provide classes for their students over the internet. Older teachers who don’t normally use technology like this must work hard to create a digital classroom. Parents are required to take more responsibility for their children’s education.

One pastor told us that, when the quarantine was put in place, he was restricted to his church, while his wife and son had to stay in their home. They were only separated by a few blocks but they could not reach each other. Fortunately, the pastor’s church had a supply of food on hand.

Christian leaders are trying to adjust to the quarantine by offering worship, prayer, and Bible study opportunities online. Many Christians are finding that the message of God’s grace is finding ears that are now more open. Believers are rejoicing that hospitals that were started by Christians are offering excellent care. They also rejoice in learning that many courageous doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals are Christians.

What you can do: In the midst of the health uncertainties, the Spirit is providing new avenues for the gospel to be proclaimed. Pray that Chinese Christians seize these opportunities to bring peace and hope to their neighbors and friends.

UPDATE: China has eased some quarantine restrictions. Tap here for a report about Wuhan, where the virus was first reported.
