NEWS//Huawei war

Huawei, a Chinese telecom giant, has warned the United States that its continuing efforts to restrict the company’s sales will result in a trade war that the U.S. cannot win.

Beginning in 2018, the United States has restricted the purchase of Huawei’s products out of fear that the company’s technology provides China will the ability to spy on American interests.

Washington placed Huawei on a blacklist in May 2019. U.S.-made goods can no longer be sold to the company. Additional measures are currently being prepared to further restrict the supply of chips to the company.

China charges that the Trump administration is restricting Huawei’s products in order to protect U.S. technology companies. China has threatened to retaliate for the U.S. blocking access to Huawei’s products in the United States and among America’s allies.

According to China’s Global Times, a Huawei executive said in an interview on March 31, “The Chinese government will not remain idle and just watch Huawei put on the chopping board, as it will have no other choice but to take similar countermeasures against US firms.”

Chinese rhetoric reached a higher threat level on April 2. The Global Times reports, “China on Thursday issued a blatant warning against what it calls ‘US technology hegemony,’ signaling that it would counter Washington's efforts to crack down on Chinese tech firms….”

“The renewed tension in the technology sector adds fresh fire to widening clashes between the world's two biggest economies…. However, these forces might have picked the wrong approach, as China will strike back and could hit the US technology sector ten times harder than what the US could hurt China, given its growing technological capabilities and massive market…. “
