DEVOTION//Have a great day
“Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days” (Psalm 90:14).
"How's everything this morning?" the clerk chirped.
I quickly ran through my mental list of satisfaction indicators.
Breathing. Check
Standing upright. Check.
Aches. Nothing to complain about.
Weather. Decent for Wisconsin in July.
"I'm good," I replied with a smile. "I'm good."
But no item on that checklist provides an adequate indication of how my life is going. Neither my health nor my wealth measure the worth of a day. Nor does my success, my appearance, my job-satisfaction, or my accomplishments. Every time I gauge the worth of a day based on those measures, the days easily transform into hard, horrible, hopeless, heartbreaking, no-good days.
How much better to begin each day with this prayer:
"Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love."
Lord, let me find satisfaction today in your unending, unchanging, unwavering grace. Remind me that no matter what else this day brings, your love will not fail me. It cannot fail me.
Don't let me lose sight of the guarantee of your love: "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us" (1 John 3:16).
Then empower me to join other saints to "sing for joy and be glad all our days.” May your grace overwhelm me so I sing and am glad, though allergies limit my breathing. Though I struggle to stand. Though my back aches. Though the day is flooded with thunderstorms.
"Satisfy [me] in the morning with your unfailing love," Father. That focus on your love is all I require to have a great day.
