DEVOTION//Counters
Jesus has made us counters.
But this kind of counter doesn't have anything to do with numbers. It has everything to do with being "in Christ." I'd better explain.
Counters
Did you know that typographers have named the open space inside the letters a, b, d, e, g, o, p, and q? You've probably already guessed what that name is. Yes, counter.
A counter is the space inside an enclosed letter. You might think that only typographers care about counters. But we Christians should pay attention to counters. They offer a helpful picture of what it means for us to be "in Christ."
In Christ
The New Testament word for "in" is also only two letters. It's pronounced "en." It pictures something operating within something else.
So when Romans 8:1 says, "There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus," it is picturing us completely surrounded by Jesus. Like fruit that is suspended in Jell-O, we Christians are encased in Jesus' infinite love, power, and protection. For that reason, no condemnation for our sins is able to touch us.
Because of God's grace, we are like the space inside an a, b, d, e, g, o, p, and q. We are counters. We are safe "in Christ." Secure "in Christ." Loved "in Christ." At rest "in Christ."
Because we are "in Christ," we are counters. And we are guaranteed we count. With God. Forever.
