MINISTRY//See something; DON'T say something

After an online worship service at one of the churches 316NOW consults with, a Christian man poured out his heart, criticizing the government for its unfairness to him and his family.

Other Christians immediately forbid him from saying anything related to the Chinese government. Even a hint of criticism of the government puts the group into danger.

Criticism crushed

The Chinese government is extremely aggressive when it deals with critical comments. It usually begins its response by intimidating anyone who voices discontent. But when scare tactics don't work, those people may lose their homes, their jobs, and other privileges. It is not uncommon for them to serve lengthy prison terms. The government may also destroy the lives of their family members.

Silence encouraged

The threat of government retribution keeps almost everyone in China quiet, in spite of their knowledge of the evil things that are done by the government. This includes Christians. But many believers are confused about their role in the face of government oppression. They are uncertain about what they should do. Still other Chinese Christians are frustrated that the Church only talks about the injustice while doing nothing to advocate for what is right.

What you can do: Ask the Spirit to keep Christians across China focused on the grace that Jesus guarantees us so they remain firm in the faith. Ask him to lead those believers more deeply into his Word where they will find his guidance, strength, comfort, and help to meet the challenges they face.
