NEWS//No effeminate men on Chinese TV

In its effort to promote "revolutionary culture," China has banned effeminate men on TV.  The ban is another step in the government tightening its control over business and society while enforcing its brand of morality.

China's National Radio and TV Administration (NRTVA) has decreed that broadcasters must “resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal esthetics.” To emphasize the government's distaste for men who appear less than masculine, the NRTVA has used “girlie guns” (“niang pao”), an insulting term for effeminate men, to describe them.

According to Joe McDonald, a reporter for AP News, "President Xi Jinping has called for a 'national rejuvenation,' with tighter Communist Party control of business, education, culture, and religion. Companies and the public are under increasing pressure to align with its vision for a more powerful China and healthier society."
