DEVOTION / Worthy through Jesus
None Are Worthy
Have you--as a Christian-- ever reflected on how blessed you are to have the Lord in your life? God's Word makes clear that none of us are worthy. How amazing that the Lord of Universe has called us out of all humanity to be his children! Whether in America, China, Russia, Europe, or any corner of the earth, God has called out his special people, unworthy though we be.
God calls the unworthy
Ponder the accounts from the Old Testament and New Testaments of the unworthy who Almighty God called to faith and used in his service. A few examples include...
Moses, the man who tried to excuse himself because he was not a good speaker.
David, a shepherd boy turned king who fell into sexual sin and murder.
Jonah, the prophet who ran away.
Daniel, a young refugee far from home.
Peter, the disciple who denied his Savior.
Paul, the former persecutor of Jesus' followers
What's your story?
If we are honest, we all have our own stories of unworthiness. Perhaps only you and God alone know those shortcomings. Maybe it has remained a secret shame. Or maybe the shame you always thought could be hidden now has crawled out into the open to haunt your days. Is it a scarlet "A" for adultery? affairs? abortion? abuse? apostasy? Or "B" for blasphemy?, brutality? From A to Z, our guilt is plain. Our total unworthiness is apparent.
Unworthy yet justified
Take a moment and feast your eyes on Romans chapter 3. Rejoice in God's goodness to us through Jesus. How clear it is ...
There is no one righteous, not even one (Romans 3:10).
All have turned away they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one (Romans 3:12).
... all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
Comfort for our unworthy souls
Those verses condemn our unworthy souls. Yet the glorious message of Romans 3:24 dispels the gloom. Those wonderful words are "all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."
Yes, Jesus' worthy sacrifice abolishes our worthlessness. His righteousness becomes ours through the faith worked in our hearts.
Prayer thought
Thank you, precious Savior, for rescuing our unworthy souls. Our many sins weighed us down and separated us from an eternity with you. Thank you for taking on our unworthiness and rescuing us through your redemption. Thank you for calling us to faith. Help us to spread this life-giving message. Amen.
