DEVOTION / Can I have your attention ... please?
NEWS FLASH!
The attention span of the average American is now 8 seconds! According to that report, we have a shorter attention span than a goldfish!
What did you say? I wasn't paying attention.
Exactly! Followers of Jesus travel a road filled with distractions and temptations. It is a dangerous path.
What captures your attention?
Jesus calls us to walk the narrow way. But we are sheep that love to wander. Distractions are everywhere. What distracts you? News? Weather? Sports? Finances? Texting? Games? Porn? Technology? Politics? The list is endless.
What does God say about "attention span"?
While the Bible perhaps doesn't address "attention span" directly, our loving Lord warns us about a coming time when people won't be interested in "sound doctrine," but will be drawn to all kinds of things their "itching ears want to hear." (2 Timothy 4:3)
The "foolish virgins" in Matthew 25:1-13 were waiting for the Bridegroom's arrival. They missed the event because they weren't paying attention. We don't want that to happen to us, our families, our friends. Missing Jesus, our Savior, is a mistake with eternal consequences.
Your church has an answer
Did you know that studies show that one of the few places available to grow your attention span is your church? Listening to God's Word in readings and sermons is one of the few places today where you are asked to focus on more than 15-second news bytes or 30-second commercials.
As we walk the narrow way to heaven, let's remember the words of Colossians 3:2, "Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things." Look forward to the heavenly reward awaiting you "when Christ, who is your life, appears, then you will also appear with him in glory."
316NOW pays attention to sharing this life-saving message here and around the world. Don't be distracted. Seek the "one thing that is needful."
Prayer Thought
Loving Lord, we are easily distracted. Our attention span is short. Help us to focus on you and your Word. Call us back when we wander. Allow us to share the clear message of your love with the world. Amen.
