NEWS / China's Cultural Revolution
On May 16, 1966, China’s Chairman Mao Zedong published the “May 16 Notification.” That decree launched the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.
The Cultural Revolution killed more than 1.5 million people who were considered enemies of Mao. It plunged China into a decade of chaos and destroyed China’s economy. When the Cultural Revolution is paired with Mao’s 1958-1961 Great Leap Forward that killed up to 45 million people, Mao becomes infamous as the worst mass murderer of the 20th century.
