DEVOTION / Mary at the Market

DEVOTION / Mary at the Market

Luke 10:42 -- Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Honey, we need groceries

I have a feeling that American and Chinese often people handle shopping differently.  At our house, if the groceries are running low, I say "Hey, it's time for a trip to Kroger's — or Piggly Wiggly — or Safeway."  If we need a variety of items, I might say, "I'm heading for Walmart — or Target."

Shopping in the Chinese market

That's more like the Chinese model. A friend who lives in China has described what it's like shopping in their gigantic markets. She goes to a block-long building, sometimes stories high. This market is filled with small stalls filled with everything to be imagined. Food, jewelry, clothing, batteries, cosmetics, plants, shoes, tools, school supplies, toys, rugs, and much more.

What money can buy

And it's not only merchandise; it's while-you-wait services. Ladies with sewing machines are ready to take your measurements and create a new look for you. Get your watch fixed. Have a key made. Try new delicacies. You never know what the next "shop" might offer you. It's easy to spend hours looking for what you need.

Mary has the right idea

The Bible account of Mary and Martha comes to mind. Martha was concerned about all the busy-ness of hosting the Master at her house. Everything needed to be right: food, drink, seating,  accommodations. It was plenty to worry about and keep her busy. All of it seemed important for life to run smoothly.  Martha had great intentions, but her attention was forced away from what was most important. The Lord cautions Martha and commends her sister Mary for "choosing what is better." What was better, of course, was learning from her Savior and listening to his words.

The marketplace of ideas offers a dizzying array of philosophies, theories, and creeds. How easy for us and — our Chinese friends — to be distracted or caught in what is of no eternal value.  316NOW seeks to point all to the "one thing that is needful" — our precious Savior Jesus.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, we need you and only you. Yet in this great wide world, it is easy for us to get distracted or misled. Help us to keep our focus on you-- the one we truly need. Amen.

3/16NOW Day arrives on March 16 (3/16). How will you celebrate it?
