A Classic Show: Mission Impossible

I watched Mission Impossible growing up. Catchy theme music and agent Jim Phelps receiving the dossier on the next mission. He'd leaf through photos and hear: "Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it..." Then the famous words: "This tape will self-destruct in 30 seconds." The tape recorder started smoking. Jim and his IMF team needed to do the "impossible."

Your Mission Impossible

You might be facing challenges that look like your own "mission impossible." Maybe it's family or school or work issues. Or medical problems. Or a slew of decisions, deadlines, and responsibilities. Are you saying to yourself, "It's impossible! I just can't do it!"? We've all faced that desperation.

It would be easy to think that about ministry in China. The population is over 1.4 billion souls! The government is trying to stamp out beliefs that don't mesh with its worldview. So much opposition. It can seem like "mission impossible."

With God, nothing is impossible

Jesus gave his disciples — and ultimately us — the command to take his saving Word to all the world (Matthew 28:19-20). We have God's promise that his Word will accomplish all that he wills (Isaiah 55:11) and that he wants none to perish eternally (2 Peter 3:9).

Whether it's your own personal Mission Impossible or it's the seemingly impossible challenge of reaching the world with the gospel, let's count on God's grace and his promises.

With God comes abundance

2 Corinthians 9:8 reads God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

Note the emphasis four times on the word "all." God will give you all grace, in all things, at all times, having all that you need. What a promise! Plus, notice the word "abound." It appears twice for emphasis. God will make all grace abound to you and you will abound in every good work."

"Abound" means "more than enough." It's the same word from Jesus feeding the 5,000. Would there be enough to go around? Plenty! With 12 basketfuls gathered afterward! More than enough to spare!

It’s not impossible

That's the way God works. Jesus' redemption is for the whole world. He lavishes his grace upon us. Now we have opportunities to spread this "impossible" love all around the world!

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the reason there is no "mission impossible." We have your promise that we will abound in all grace and in good works at all times and in all things. Through your power help us to share the message of your "impossible" love.
