Ministry / A double Memorial Day

Ministry / A double Memorial Day

Memorial Day

Memorial Day in the United States is a day for solemn, grateful reflection on the ultimate sacrifice that over 1.1 million American soldiers made during all the wars the U.S. has fought. For us Christians it is also a day to thank God for their bravery and their commitment to protect us and others from tyranny.

More to remember

I certainly do not wish to detract from the debt we owe the brave men and women who have fought and died for our nation. However, today also brings to my mind the martyrdom of Christians in China. According to China's Christian Martyrs by Paul Hathaway, a quarter of a million believers have paid the ultimate price for their faith since the gospel came to China in the 7th Century. Some were foreign missionaries; most were Chinese.

Tragically, Christian martyrdom continues today in China. Imprisonment, torture, and harassment also are unleashed against some Christians. China considers 316NOW's proclamation of God's grace a violation of its laws. Our Chinese friends live under the threat of intimidation and discrimination.

A double Memorial Day

For that reason, Memorial Day for me is a time to remember Christians in China who loved the Lord of Life more than they feared death, in addition to the valiant American men and women who have protected my nation and the people of other lands. Along with remembering these soldiers of both cross and country, I am offering my prayers of thanksgiving for their service and example.

Perhaps you would join me with your own prayers.
