Devotion / God’s special book
How many books have been written about you?
It is estimated there are over 15,000 books written about President Lincoln, more than any other famous American. How many books are written about you? One needs to be well known to have his or her name appear in a book. Presidents, sports heroes, inventors, and world leaders are just some people who would have books written about them.
God’s book
Did you know there is a book that does include your name? It is no ordinary book. The book that includes your name is the most important book ever written. It’s so important that it isn’t kept in any library or museum. This book is in heaven. It’s called the Book of Life. The Bible mentions this book several times.
God is the keeper of this book, and in it he lists the name of every believer. These are the people who will one day stand before God’s throne dressed in the blood of Jesus. Daniel 12:1 says: “Everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered.” And Revelation 20:12 says: “I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life.”
On the last day, the names of the unbelievers will not be found in God’s book. Psalm 69:28 says: “May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.” And when the unbelievers stand before God’s throne, they will be sent away for eternal punishment: “Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).
God has promised that those who are his children will not be blotted out of his book: “The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels” (Revelation 3:5).
Your name is in that book!
We rejoice knowing that our names are written in God’s book. We thank the Holy Spirit for giving us faith so that we might be included in God’s registry. In God’s eyes we are important enough to have our name on God’s list. John said it well: “Rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (John 10:20).
