Devotion / Each new day
Reveille
My father was a bugler in WW II. His high school trumpet lessons prepared him for something he never expected. Each morning before the sun rose he sounded reveille and every night at sundown he played taps. I often wondered how difficult it was for him to be the first to crawl out of bed before the rest of his company to sound their wake-up call.
Each person faces the new day differently. To some rising early is the thing to do. Others would rather sleep until half the morning is past. Regardless, every 24 hours we must all rise to face the new day. Every 24 hours it is likely that we prepare for the same routine, same place, same time, same problems.
Another day
Do you dread getting up in the morning? For many of us, the start of a new day awakens in us the same trials and frustrations we put to bed the night before, only to hash them all over again. God wants us to begin each new day with him. He knows our problems and exactly what it is we will be facing. After all, he’s been through the dress rehearsal already. God’s wish for us is to begin our day concentrating less on our problems and more on the Problem Solver.
Strength for each new day
But God promises more. Besides being with us each morning, he also promises to give us the necessary strength to get through the day. We all know how important that first burst of strength is in the morning. Isaiah 33:2 is a fine prayer for us to remember. Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning. What a wonderful blessing we have to wake up each day knowing our gracious Lord will provide the strength we need to face the next 24 hours. What a joy and comfort it is to rise every day knowing that our Savior, who paid a dear price for us, is where we can find the hope and strength to go on. Psalm 143:8 sums it up well, Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Tomorrow morning before you rise out of bed, think of the sacrifice Christ paid for you and the enormous love he has shown you. If you begin your day with the Lord, the rest will fall into line. What a great start for each day!
