Devotion / Truth
What is truth?
Before Pontius Pilate sentenced Jesus to be crucified, he asked Jesus if he was really a king. Jesus answered: You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me (John 18:37). Confused, Pilate turned away and mumbled: What is truth? Pilate couldn’t find the truth even when it was looking him in the eye. Why did Pilate and so many other people today have problems finding the truth?
Perhaps it’s because truth is the expression of God himself. God is the author and source of truth and Jesus is truth incarnate. John 1:14 tells us Jesus was filled with truth, We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Jesus tells us in John 14:6, I am the way and the truth and the life.” That is why Jesus frequently began speaking with the words, I tell you the truth . . .. If God’s Word is not totally and completely true in all it says, our faith is useless.
Apart from God, there is no absolute truth. Truth cannot be defined or recognized without God as the source. Tragically, the whole concept of truth falls apart when God is removed from the equation. There is no truth apart from God. We see this happening in our society today. Rebellion, hatred, and all sorts of evil is what we find when there is a lack of truthfulness and a connection with the God of truth. This is why our nation’s courts and educational system have such difficulty finding their bearings. They no longer hold to God’s truth.
God doesn’t lie
God cannot lie as we see in Numbers 23:19, God is not a man, that he should lie,” and Hebrews 6:18 says, “It was impossible for God to lie. And so we strive to seek truth, tell truth, and believe truth. As lovers of truth and followers of the God of truth, we will want to pray Psalm 25:5, Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.
Jesus wants us to be certain he is the source of truth and his Word is where that truth can be found. We thank God for showing us the truth, and we ask the Holy Spirit to keep the fire of truth burning inside us, so we can share the truth of God’s love and faithfulness through the resurrected Savior with those around us.
