Devotion / One simple question

"Are you a Christian?"

Ever been asked that? It's a pretty straightforward question. Maybe you took that as a compliment. Maybe someone looked at your life, your words, your actions and noticed you are different . . . in a good way. Was it easy to say? "Yes, I am a Christian!"

For the most part, in America it is easy to declare your faith in Jesus. Few of us will be assaulted, beaten, or persecuted for saying that. In fact, if you might be asked that question with wrong motives, the law would even be on your side. America's rights of "freedom of religion" assert that it is wrong to use your beliefs as a bias against you.

"Are you a Christian?"

In other countries around the world, however, that one simple question is not without consequence. In places like China, Indonesia, India, and Islamic countries, answering that you are a follower of Jesus can have deadly repercussions. It might mean a visit to police headquarters for interrogation or torture. It might mean being put on a watch list or not getting the job, housing, schooling, promotion you have worked so hard for. It could mean putting your family in danger or years of harsh imprisonment . . . even beatings or martyrdom.

"Are you a Christian?"

Peter faced that question before the term "Christian" was ever coined. Three times. He struggled to give the true answer. He shed bitter tears of repentance because his denials. His words, I don't even know the man! (Matthew 26:74) rang in his ears. Especially when he met Jesus on the shore after the resurrection and Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved him.

Peter undoubtedly remembered Jesus words: Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory (Luke 9:26a). How blessed Peter was – and we are – that Jesus offers us his full and free forgiveness for all the times we have not stood up for our Savior. Rather, let us boldly declare along with Paul: for I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16).

"Yes, we are Christians!"

At 316NOW – through the Spirit's power – we proclaim the saving message of Jesus to those in countries where testifying to your faith in the Savior is dangerous. Today, join us in praying for all those who need to answer wisely, boldly, and faithfully to this one simple question.
