DEVOTION/Are you a patient person?

DEVOTION/Are you a patient person?

The Cat in the Hat

Dr. Seuss is a prominent name in children’s literature. He has had over 60 books published that have been enjoyed by generations of children. But did you know that did not come easily? He endured rejection of his books 27 times before the first one was accepted for publication. He learned a lesson in patience!

Then there was Abraham Lincoln. Beginning in the 1830s, his business failed, he lost running as speaker of the house, he was defeated for nomination to Congress, he was defeated in his run for U.S. Senate twice. In 1856 he failed to win the nomination for vice president. Yet his persistence and patience paid off. In 1860 he won the presidency.

 How patient are you?

Do you consider yourself a patient person? When waiting in long lines at the grocery store, do you always display patience? When your computer is running slow and you are in a hurry, do you sit and wait patiently? It is said patience is a virtue. That may be true.

Noah was assured that the Lord would send a storm the likes of which had never been seen. One hundred nineteen years later, he was still patiently sawing and sanding. Abraham was promised a baby boy. Twenty-four years later he was still waiting. David was anointed the next king. After 21 years passed, he was still plucking his harp and tending sheep.

Patience is defined as “the ability to tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering.” The Bible mentions patience in various ways. In 1 Thessalonians 5:14, Paul tells us to be patient with everyone. We are to live in love and acceptance with those around us. Proverbs 14:29 warns, Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.

 Are you patient with God?

We know beyond any doubt that God has been patient with us. How many times each day do we disappoint him? Yet, we must also show patience with God. His schedule is not our schedule, his plans are not ours, and his timing is not according to our clocks. God will do what is best at the best time. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7).

Similarly, we must be patient for the Lord’s return. He will keep his promise. All God asks of us is to wait patiently. James 5:8 assures us, You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.
