DEVOTION / Who do you trust?

DEVOTION / Who do you trust?

We need to trust some people

Who do you know that is trustworthy? We trust the doctor when he tells us to take medicine. We also trust a policeman who looks out for our welfare. And if we are flying in an airplane we need to trust the pilot to get us safely to our destination. We might say that we trust those who have our best interests at heart. We put our confidence in them, knowing they will not fail us. Certainly we would not trust a liar or a thief. Trust is only as good as the one in whom we place it.

 We can always trust God

What about God? Can we trust him? When we are sleeping, do we trust that he will stay awake? When we pray, do we trust God to always hear us? Do we trust him when he says heaven is a real place, or when he tells us he loves us? These are important questions to ask.

One night Jesus visited the disciples who were sailing on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus decided to come to them walking on the water. The disciples were surprised when they saw Jesus. Peter was so excited that he climbed out of the boat and began to walk toward Jesus. He knew Jesus was watching him, and he trusted Jesus to keep him safe. Suddenly a large wave headed his way. Peter’s trust weakened and he began to sink. Peter’s action teaches us an important lesson about trust.

In the First Commandment we learn that we should fear, love, and trust in God above all things. Another word for trust is faith. When we say we have faith in God we mean that we trust him completely. We rely on every word he says, and we can be certain without a doubt that he will keep every promise he has made.

Like Peter, we sometimes see large waves about to overwhelm us, and we begin to doubt that God can really help. At those times we need to understand that God is always faithful. We can trust him because he loves us and wants only the best for us. His love was so great it took him to the cross where he died for us. The more we pray and learn about God’s love, the more we understand why we can trust him. Then our trust begins to grow even stronger. That’s what David meant in Psalm 9:10: Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

I am trusting you, Lord Jesus; never let me fall.
I am trusting you forever and for all.
